What are your daily responsibilities?
Developing and updating P&IDs and PFDs in regions of Upgrading and Extraction via AutoCAD and Visio
What were some projects you were involved in?
Using statistical analysis to determine the factors contributing to diluent loss in the Naphtha Recovery Unit. Using chemical engineering knowledge to propose methods to mitigate diluent loss in the Naphtha Recovery Unit to allow Plant 16 to run more efficiently. Measuring the composition of bitumen samples using NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) technology and learning how to develop models to measure the composition of bitumen in real-time using the NIR equipment.

What did your company expect from you as a 2nd/3rd year co-op student?
Performance of basica statistical analysis (Regression, ANOVA etc.) Basic understanding of unit operations such as stripping towers, distillation columns, heat exchangers etc.
Did you like your overall PEY experience? Why or why not?
I very much enjoy my PEY experience. I'm learning lots of new chemical engineering applications everyday and working here allows me to use the knowledge I've acquired in school. I'm given projects that are interesting and not mundane, which makes work fun and exciting.
One fun fact about your job?
Fort McMurray is actually really cold. It's not a joke.
