Participant Info

Drilling Engineering Co-op
Work Term
Sept 2012 - Aug 2013
What are your daily responsibilities?
Updating key performance indicators of active drilling sites. Doing rough analysis of cement bond logs. Creating stick diagrams (one page summary sheets about each well to be drilled).
What were some projects you were involved in?
Drilling optimization studies. Would be a lot of data mining/crunching to come up with ways to reduce the amount of time spent drilling wells. Which wells were drilled perfectly and on time and how to recreate that.
What were strong points of your interview? Did grades matter?
My grades are definitely nothing to brag about and they did not bring up any discussion of grades during the interview. It was a phone interview, mostly behavioural questions. At the end, always ask some good questions (I noted a recent CEO change, and asked if it affected company culture in a major way).
Which skill sets/courses were most relevant to your position?
Excel is huge, the more you know, the better you'll be. Presentation skills, had 4-5 of them over the year. Interpersonal skills are big too. Especially when you're out on site with tons of workers who aren't from an office based job or aren't engineers. Fluid mechanics, bit of heat transfer.
What did your company expect from you as a 2nd/3rd year co-op student?
Willing to take on any task assigned. Ask questions, a lot of them.
Did you like your overall PEY experience? Why or why not?
Yeah it was fun. Suncor hires so many interns that its very easy to make friends. Go for the student socials, its how I made friends at many different companies.
One fun fact about your job?
I got to go out to drilling rigs and stand on them.
