What are your daily responsibilities?
Daily report showing production efficiency over the past 24 hours, data entry for breakdowns and minor stops over the past 24 hours, attending daily performance meeting, working on various projects and providing support to my supervisors as needed.
What were some projects you were involved in?
TPM Facilitator - facilitated a team of 12 operators and 3 mechanics to improve the efficiency of the lines. Quality Project - trained line operators on how to use the online data entry system to input their quality check results. Various duties to prepare for visits from upper management (such as company CEO).
What were strong points of your interview? Did grades matter?
Strong points of the interview - show your charisma, interpersonal skills, ambition. The position is very people-oriented, so these skills need to come across in the interview. Grades are reviewed but they do not matter very much.
Which skill sets/courses were most relevant to your position?
Anything related to communication and interpersonal skills. Presentation skills will be an asset. Depending on the projects worked on, there may be some knowledge of P&ID or Engineering drawings required.
What did your company expect from you as a 2nd/3rd year co-op student?
They expect someone who can take on a lot of responsibility and effectively prioritize. There is a lot of interaction between the TPM student and the hourly employees working in the plant, so it is expected that you will be able to effectively communicate with others (who, most of the time, do not have the technical background that you have).
Did you like your overall PEY experience? Why or why not?
Yes! It was a great experience, and allowed me to figure out a bit about what I would like to do when I graduate.
